James St John
Associate Professor, Griffith University
Associate Professor James St John is Head of the Clem Jones Centre for Neurobiology and Stem Cell Research within both the Griffith Institute for Drug Discovery at Griffith University. The Centre has three principal programs: the Spinal Injury Project, the Brain Repair Project and Medicines for the Nervous System, with the overall aim to develop therapies to treat acquired brain injury and spinal cord injury.
He works closely with the community through his outreach program TogetherScience.com to develop research questions and solutions that are of importance to the community. His team uses an entrepreneurial approach to research with a clear focus on the path to market. By combining advanced cell purification techniques with natural product drug discovery and engineering, the team is designing three-dimensional nerve bridges that will help regenerate the brain and spinal cord. While James is a neuroscientist, he has a PhD and Bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Science and a Bachelor of Letters (International Development). He has published 80 journal articles and has been awarded in excess of $10 million in research funding.
