Australian Mild Traumatic Brain Injury Study (AUS-mTBI)
About the Project
Hopkins researchers, Prof Tamara Ownsworth, Prof Elizabeth Kendall AO, and Kylie Rixon, are collaborating with Curtain University who are leading a nationwide MRFF funded-study on mild traumatic brain injury (also known as concussion).
The AUS-mTBI study harnesses mobile and web-based app technology to better understand concussion and improve management of concussion. We are seeking information and insights from 5000 people who have recently experienced concussion, who can be guided in their recovery while contributing to groundbreaking research.
In Australia, there are 180,000 cases of concussion every year, and at least one in five people will experience concussion in their lifetime. The aim of this study is to better understand concussion, to improve management of concussion, and ultimately to improve treatment.
AUS-mTBI is a collaboration of more than 100 experts in concussion from across the country. This is the first study in this field to integrate best practice, world leading research and patient recovery experiences.
Using the HeadCheck app, participants have access to an evidence-based recovery program, personalised to their own circumstances. The app provides an easy-to-use program that teaches people how to understand and manage their symptoms over time and tracks their recovery. The information gathered can also be shared with clinicians.
