Factors that Influence the Adoption of Rehabilitation Technologies: A Multi-Disciplinary Qualitative Exploration
Published 20th June 2023
This collaborative study involving researchers from the BioSpine research project and The Hopkins Centre explores the factors influencing the adoption of rehabilitation technologies through an in-depth, multi-stakeholder analysis. Conducting semi-structured focus groups as part of a larger project on co-designing neurorestorative technology, researchers identified six key themes critical for the successful integration of technology in rehabilitation settings: the overarching cost, benefits for all involved, the necessity of trust, operational ease, accessibility, and collaborative design ("the 'co' in co-design").
Findings suggest that direct engagement of diverse stakeholders during the development process can mitigate potential negative impacts on adoption and enhance outcomes for people with disabilities. This engagement is vital to addressing common issues of technology underutilization and abandonment in rehabilitation contexts. This publication was awarded the 2023 Menzies Health Institute of Queensland Quality Publication Award in recognition of the publication being included in the top 10% of Q1 journals.
