Proud to be a part of REWARD

The Hopkins Centre is part of an international alliance of organisations that support the reduction of waste in research, by making research more relevant, transparent and translatable. Currently only a small amount of big data is being used and analysed, this project and the Centre are proudly involvement in the REWARD initiative, which stands for ‘REduce Research Waste And Reward Diligence. Relevant and translatable research is one of our key objectives at the Hopkins Centre, so we have been keen to get support and be involved in this great initiative and working towards reducing waste in research through reusing and repurposing old data, as well as increasing the value of research through sharing and exchanging documentation, information and resources.

According to Director of the Hopkins Centre, Professor Elizabeth Kendall, “Our big data projects fit well with our commitment to the international alliance of organisations focussed on the reduction of waste in research". It has been estimated that 85% of research is wasted, usually because it asks the wrong questions, is badly designed, not published or poorly reported. While this primarily diminishes the value of research, it also represents a significant financial loss: an estimated US$ 240,000,000,000 were wasted in Life Sciences research in 2010. However, many causes of this waste are simple problems that could easily be fixed.

Check out Reward Alliance and learn more about sharing and the exchange of document, information and resources to help increase the value of research and reduce waste in research.
