Year-End Reflections, 2024
From The Hopkins Centre Director, Tim Geraghty
Dear Members and Friends,
As 2024 comes to a close, it’s a great time to reflect on the rich tapestry of initiatives, collaborations, and achievements that have marked this year at The Hopkins Centre but before I do that I would like to draw your attention to the story showcasing some of our research currently being undertaken in partnership with the Queensland Spinal Cord Injuries Service at Princess Alexandra Hospital, Metro South Health. Because of the breadth and always evolving nature of our Hopkins research programs, it can be challenging for our members and partners to stay up to date with the research that we are currently doing so we are trialling a different approach of collated a brief summary all in one spot. We are focussing on SCI research first but plan to expand this strategy in 2025. I hope you find the format helpful.
So, now back to 2024. This year saw our community come together for the 8th annual Bold Ideas Better Solutions Symposium (#BIBS24) on October 23rd. With over 250 participants engaging both in-person and online, and 39 distinguished presenters, the symposium was a vibrant platform for exploring ‘Interdisciplinary Research: Solving Complex Rehabilitation Challenges’. Our discussions spanned critical areas such as sleep rehabilitation, pain management, enabling technologies, and sustainable employment, highlighting the dynamic and multifaceted nature of our work.
Our regular Hopkins Hours have continued to be a cornerstone of our engagement and there is more information on these later in this edition.
I extend my deepest gratitude to all our researchers, citizen-researchers, and lived experience experts, whose dedication and hard work have driven our success. Your contributions are vital to our mission of enhancing health and wellbeing for individuals with long-term and complex rehabilitation needs. In particular, this year has seen several of our researchers receive incredible honours:
- Elizabeth Kendall was honoured with a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in recognition of her significant service to rehabilitation research, to people with a disability, and to tertiary education
- Hopkins Centre Ambassador and researcher Belinda Adams was honoured with a Medal of the Order of Australia, General Division, for her service to community health and
- Kevin Cocks receiving a Significant Contribution award for his outstanding and sustained contributions to research and policy that upholds the dignity and inclusion of people with a disability
Furthermore, we owe a great debt of thanks to our funding partners—the Motor Accident Insurance Commission and NIISQ, Metro South Health, and Griffith University. Their ongoing support is crucial in enabling us to pursue our ambitious goals and make a lasting impact in the field of disability and rehabilitation research.
As we move into 2025, I am excited about the opportunities ahead. Together, we will work together continue to push boundaries, innovate, and implement solutions to complex problems and create positive practical change in the real world.
Thank you once again for your commitment and collaboration throughout the year. I wish you and you families and friends a restful, joyful and safe holiday season and look forward to another year of making meaningful advancements together in 2025.
Warm regards,
Professor Tim Geraghty
